The 99 Names

The Most Beautiful Names of God, in Arabic, with how to say each one and what it means.

The names of God, also known as al-Asma al-Husna, the Most Beautiful Names, are used by Muslims in many ways to call on God and remember Him.

  • In prayer and supplication. Muslims often call on God by these names in their personal prayers, their duas, and after the obligatory prayers.
  • In remembrance. The names are often used in dhikr, the practice of remembering and praising God, which can be done at any time and in any place.
  • In reflection. Muslims reflect on what each name means for their own lives, to understand God’s attributes more deeply.
  • With prayer beads. A tasbih, a string of 33 or 99 beads, helps keep count while reciting the names or other words of remembrance.

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Allah has ninety-nine names, i.e. one-hundred minus one, and whoever knows them will go to Paradise."

Two common practices

Thirty-three, thirty-three, thirty-four. When Fatimah, the Prophet’s daughter, asked him for a servant, he taught her and Ali instead to say SubhanAllah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times and Allahu Akbar 34 times when going to bed (Sahih al-Bukhari 5361). After each obligatory prayer, he taught saying SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah and Allahu Akbar thirty-three times each (Sahih al-Bukhari 843).

Reciting the names. Each of the ninety-nine names is recited once, often with a tasbih to keep count, as a way of reflecting on the attributes of God.

About this list

The Prophet said that God has ninety-nine names (Sahih al-Bukhari 2736), but no list is given in Sahih al-Bukhari. The list on this page is the one narrated in Jami at-Tirmidhi 3507, which opens with the name Allah. At-Tirmidhi himself called the narration gharib, reported through a single chain, and hadith scholars grade the list as weak (Ahmad Muhammad Shakir: Daif; Al-Albani: Daif; Zubair Ali Zai: Daif); other collections give different lists. The meanings are the published English translation of that narration, as shown on sunnah.com.

The 2024 version of this page followed a popular list that leaves out the name Allah and adds al-Ahad, the One, from the Quran: “Say, He is Allah, [who is] One” (Quran 112:1).
